  • 4 Garage Door Maintenance Tips

You can just ignore your garage door, but then you can count on it to slowly break down over time.  That costs you more money and more stress and hassle later on down the road.

However, if you perform some relatively simple forms of maintenance, you can avoid more problems in the future:

    1.  Lubricate Your Door If It’s Noisy

This is a good idea, but you have to do it in the right way.  Do not use WD 40.  Instead, use a lithium or silicone-based spray.  Make sure you lubricate the chain rail, rollers, hinges, stems, ball bearings, and lock.  There are also certain parts you should avoid lubricating, such as the garage door track and spring.

    2.  Clean Your Garage Door Track

Lubricant does not make the garage door track function any more effectively, so refrain from lubricating the garage door track in any way.  In fact, lubricants can cause more damage because they can cause more dust and debris to attract to the area, which eventually hardens and impairs the door’s functioning.  Instead, simply clean the track, making sure it’s free of any debris.

    3.  Regularly Check for Wear and Tear

Make sure you inspect all moving garage door parts, such as the springs, cables, and rollers.  Look to see if you can find any signs of damage or wear.  In many cases, someone with basic do-it-yourself skills can replace the rollers.  However, if there are more complex repairs to be performed, such as spring replacement, you might want to leave those tasks to a professional.  The springs are under a high amount of tension and can cause severe injury if they’re not handled properly.

    4. Clean the Front and Rear of the Garage Door

Simple use a mild detergent and a soft-bristled brush to take care of this task.  Do this 3-4 times per year or so.  What this type of cleaning does is remove chemicals and dirt that could impair the functioning of the door.  If it’s a wooden door, you might also want to repaint it every few years or so to reduce moisture which could seep inside and warp the door.  If the warping gets too bad, you might have to call a professional to replace the door entirely.

So in a nutshell, that’s how you maintain your garage door.  And remember, if you need help, you can always contact a professional.
